If Jasmine's Suitors Were the Disney Princes

Updated: Dec 13, 2023

How would she respond to their advances?

We all know Jasmine hated being continually wooed by what she referred to as overdressed, self-absorbed princes, who only seemed to want possession of her beauty, her wealth, and her father's kingdom. I'm pretty sure we're meant to assume all of Jasmine's suitors (apart from Aladdin and Jafar) were something like Prince Achmed. And I've often thought there was a subtle advantage to Jasmine seeing such undeniable fault in all of them. Jasmine didn't just want to marry someone decent – although if you read even a little of the Arabian Nights, you start to realize she'd have to be wary of suitors who might end up beating her later on in the marriage! Jasmine wasn't just trying to avoid the obviously awful; she was holding out for her One True Love. And if she has this much trouble getting her father to understand when she sends away suitors who weren't even treating her well (the type who might actually beat her), how could she ever explain sending away someone perfectly nice whom she just didn't “click” with?

So what if Jasmine had been courted by some of Disney's Princes? Most of them were kind, brave heroes; they were far from the stuck-up, self-absorbed suitors Jasmine was used to seeing. Would she hate them to the same extent she did her other suitors? Would any of them get the Rajah treatment? Let's go through them and see.

The Prince (Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs): He's a hopeless romantic, and would probably woo Jasmine through a spontaneous song, like he does for his equally romantic princess, Snow White. Would that charm Jasmine, though? I mean, Aladdin is romantic too, but he was more than that. He shared his life with Jasmine, which was thrilling to someone who had never left the palace before. He promised her adventures to share, something Jasmine was really missing from her own life. I don't think The Prince would think to offer that. My best guess is he would be met with a faint eye-roll and a “No, thank you”.

Prince Charming (Cinderella): Charming was actually in a very similar position to Jasmine. His father wanted him to get married, as soon as possible and he didn't care to whom, while Charming didn't want to marry for any reason other than True Love. I could see Jasmine angrily declaring she will not marry Charming, and a relieved Charming confirming he didn't want to marry her either, and the two of them getting into a lively, spirited discussion about how unfair it is that they're expected to marry for some reason other than love. Their fathers will be delighted to see them getting along so well, and left in shocked disbelief when both Charming and Jasmine declare they have no interest in marrying one another.

Prince Phillip (Sleeping Beauty): I know he was meant to be very romantic, but to me his methods felt a little overbearing – and probably not at all likely to work on someone who values autonomy and freedom more than anything else. I mean, Phillip was basically telling Aurora she had no choice but to fall in love with him because he was definitely the one she'd dreamed about – when the movie implies Aurora was just dreaming about a prince and then Phillip decided to present himself as the one! To be perfectly honest, I found it pretty hard to believe his methods would work on anyone, and I seriously doubt they would charm Jasmine... I'm kind of thinking Phillip will be getting a “How dare you?!” followed by the Rajah treatment.

Prince Eric (The Little Mermaid): It's hard to imagine many people who wouldn't get along with Prince Eric. He's just so laidback, easygoing, up for anything – and, in Jasmine's case, as unwilling to marry “just anyone” as she is. I can see him having fun with her, maybe showing her his ship which would of course fascinate her, they have a good time... and then Jasmine is left to explain to the Sultan that yes, she likes Eric, but that isn't a good enough reason to want to marry him!

Beast (Beauty and the Beast): It's kind of hard to picture our antisocial Beast going to somebody's palace and presenting himself as a suitor in the first place! Even if he did I doubt he'd manage to make a good impression on Jasmine - and unlike Belle, Jasmine would not have the patience to see if Beast has a more pleasant side underneath. Chances are he'd get angry and start yelling at her the minute something small goes wrong, and then she'd yell right back, and maybe bring out the tiger reinforcements. Perhaps the Sultan wouldn't even want someone so unpredictable marrying his daughter! (Although he didn't seem to notice the problems with the other suitors, so who knows.)

Prince Edward (Enchanted): Edward is over-the-top romantic, very inclined to pull out his sword as a first line of defence, and can be kind of silly. I doubt Jasmine would be too impressed, she probably wouldn't think he had enough substance for her liking, but I doubt he would bother her enough to call in Rajah - unless he refused to leave when she first tells him to. He'd probably be dismissed via hand-flip.

Prince Naveen (The Princess and the Frog): I doubt he would have much chance of impressing Jasmine – he's too much of a playboy. Nor do I think Naveen would care. He tried to impress Jasmine, it didn't work – oh well, maybe she has some pretty handmaids who will like his ukulele playing better.

Prince Hans (Frozen): Jasmine would definitely be a temptation for Hans (along with Snow White, Aurora, and Rapunzel), since whoever marries her will become heir to the throne of Agrabah. But while Jasmine may be as lonely as Anna, she's very clear on her standards and hasn't allowed her loneliness to make her desperate. She would hear the little voice in her head right away, that same little voice which tells her not to respect or trust Jafar, when it tells her Hans is trouble and she had better stay away. She would probably have a very hard time explaining her decision, though, and Hans would be more than capable of getting the Sultan on his side wanting the match. I do hope Hans wouldn't present himself as the exciting adventure partner Jasmine needs so that she'll forget her instincts and want to marry him!
